What Got Her Into Google?
Hi Glow Up Girls!
It’s Shallom here.
You may know me from the Glow Up Tik Tok account. I’m one of the founding members of Glow Up Tech and I’m excited to share some of the glimmers of gold that we picked from Megan Mackh’s day party feature.
Last week, we had the privilege of talking to Megan Mackh, Head of Global Telecommunication Partnerships at Google. She was an excellent speaker, sharing with us some tips about staying confident as a woman in a new workplace. Her main point was about the importance of taking leadership opportunities, no matter how inexperienced you may think you are.
Megan learned the skill of managing others while working at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and continued to cultivate it by becoming a resident advisor at her college, none other but the prestigious Stanford University. She was naturally comfortable in positions of authority and continued to demonstrate this in all areas of her life.
At the age of 22, she was put in charge of eighteen people at AT&T, some as old as her dad. She faced challenges as she struggled to prove she was worthy of her position at such a young age. Ultimately, she maintains that her steady sense self worth and confidence allowed her to be a capable supervisor. This is what made her such an appealing candidate for Google, where she has flourished for over 10 years. She maintains that Google’s priority is what you can bring to the team. It is not necessarily about having a degree in technology or computer science. Every job is seeking applicants that have novel experiences and have made the most of the opportunities they have access to.
Personally, I’ve always been very anxious when it comes to new social settings. It was incredibly empowering to hear Megan talk about rising to the top of her career. Above all, the most valuable thing you have to offer is experience. This is why it’s so important to take leadership roles in whatever task you are doing. For example, it is always more impressive to be the president of a club versus being a regular member of said club. It proves you are comfortable with responsibility and attracts you to employers.
